1) Know that you already look the part
So you think you can’t possibly look like a model because you aren’t thin enough or tall enough, of a certain race or colour, etc. etc. Welcome to the 21st century! A single Google search will show you that models are no longer one size fits all. Diversity is practically a movement in modeling circuits today- there are tons of models of different heights, colours, ethnicities, who have a tummy, are bald, hairy, gap-toothed, plus size etc. with major agencies, who are doing extremely well for themselves and whose beauty is celebrated.
2) Reinvent yourself
The next time you look in the mirror, choose to describe yourself differently, and more flatteringly. Your skin is not pale, it’s fair, not “dark”, but tan or mocha, or “chocolate”. You’re not “fat”, you’re “plus size”, curvy, voluptuous; your butt isn’t big, it’s “Kim Kardashian-esque”. Get the drift? You aren’t short, dark and kind of chubby (all words which have become so loaded, they may be mistaken for insults rather than adjectives)- you are petite, curvy and mocha with arresting eyes and an amazing smile. Somebody out there would kill to look like you! So change what you can, accept what you cannot and accentuate the positive.
3) Get some of the model-essentials
Models are healthy, well-groomed and usually fashionable. So make an effort to eat healthy, exercise regularly, cut back on cigarettes/alcohol, do the usual things- shower, take care of your teeth, hair and skin, remove body hair that bothers you, wear flattering clothes and a bit of make-up and perfume.
4) Be confident
Remember- models model all kinds of outfits, many of which they may personally not like or be comfortable in, and yet must convince others that this sequined jute sack they have on is the hottest outfit ever. So maintain an awesome posture, and be mindful of your walk and hold your head up high.
5) Be beautiful
There’s an old saying- if you want to see a pretty person- look in a magazine. If you want to see someone beautiful, look in a mirror. You don’t have to be a model to be beautiful. As Aishwarya Rai recently demonstrated, we are all more than a body and a face. You’re a real person and it’s your character, your values, wisdom and talents, everything you’ve been through that makes you who you are. Real beauty shines through, as Roald Dahl once would say:
